Who is it for?
The speech exercise class is best suited to people who have dysarthria. Dysarthria is common in Parkinson’s, stroke, MS and similar neurological conditions. Speech might sound quiet, slurred or monotonous and other people may find the speech more difficult to understand. Research shows speech exercises can strengthen the voice. When completed regularly they can support people to regain and retain a strong voice. Improved confidence in communication helps people to optimise their quality of life when living with a chronic health condition. The group accepts people with mild to severe difficulties.
When is it?
The group is offered weekly at 4.30pm to 5pm on Wednesdays via Microsoft Teams. It is an online video call. It requires access to a computer, tablet or phone with an internet connection and an email address to access the link.
What will happen in the group?
Amy will lead the group in research based speech exercises. Everyone will complete the exercises together, on mute, to reduce distraction and background noise. Examples might be saying a loud ‘ahhh’ sound or varying the pitch of the ‘ahhh’ sound. A loud and intentional voice will be practised when reading aloud and playing word games. There will also be opportunity for small group conversation based on the group topic.
How much is it?
This group operates using a Pay It Forward model. Attendance is offered free of charge, with optional contributions welcomed from those who are in a position to support the ongoing running of the group and future access for others in the community. Everyone is welcome and participation does not depend on payment.
